With the end of the lockout in view and free agency on the horizon it is time to review what the Raiders need to do once the NFL opens for business. We start with what the Raiders need to do with their own free agents.

The biggest free agent on the market may be Nnamdi Asomugha. While it is unlikely the Raiders can afford to keep Asomugha, it’s not totally impossible.

Chances the Raiders re-sign Nnamdi Asomugha: <20%

The Raiders face the real possiblity of losing two pieces of their defensive secondary, with Michael Huff poised to also become a free agent. Raiders will wait and see what the market is, but chances are a safety needy team like the Jaguars will bite hard.

Chances the Raiders re-sign Michael Huff: <20%

Charlie Frye as the thrid quarterback. It’s a thankless position and job. Fans would rather have a developmental player, but the coaches like Frye and he will get a chance to be the third quarterback.

Chances Raiders re-sign Charlie Frye: >85%

The Raiders drafted Richard Gordon and brought in a host of other lineman, but who can replace Khalif Barnes as the sixth lineman? He likely sticks.

Chances Khalif Barnes is re-signed: >90%

Sam Williams. Vet minimum. 100%

Robert Gallery, Bruce Gradkowski, Thomas Howard, Johnnie Lee Higgins 0%.

What about Zach Miller? He has been the Raiders most productive receiver for the past three seasons. The Raiders will pay whatever is necessary to retain Miller, but he will have other options.

Zach attack back: >75%

Al Davis and Hue Jackson have hinted that they should have installed Mario Henderson at right tackle earlier. Does that mean he will be back? Probably.

Super? Mario 2: >75%

The drafting of Joseph Barksdale and Henderson’s performance late in the year leaves Langston Walker twisting in the wind, if that’s possible at 350 pounds. He’s a good run blocker and the Raiders have a need for lineman.

Langston Walker Part Trois: <80%

Ricky Brown and Jarvis Moss: >90%

Samson Satele was given a tender, so he may stick, but my gut says he’s let go, backup centers are a dime a dozen. 5%

Everyone’s favorite fullback, Marcel Reece is restricted free agent. 100%

Michael Bush, restricted free agent, given first and third-round tender. 100%

Long Snapper Jon Condo: 100%

Jason Campbell will be the starter going into the 2011 season. Given his inconsistency in 2010, the Raiders must hedge its bet and bring in a quarterback of the future.

The backup quarterback is Kyle Boller and is no threat to be anything more than a backup.

What available players might fit what the Raiders need?

Terrelle Pryor

The Ohio State product will enter the supplemental draft. He’d be an interesting project quarterback for Hue Jackson to mold. The Raiders are a favorite to land Pryor and they are, like many teams, exploring Pryor’s on and off-the-field resume. He’d slide in as the third quarterback and would be groomed to take over at a future date two or three years down the line.

Given the Raiders track record of developing quarterbacks and Pryor’s lack of NFL caliber traits as a quarterback, it’s probably best to stay away from Pryor despite his size.

Vince Young

It wasn’t long ago the Raiders scouts were drooling all over Vince Young during the pre-draft process. It isn’t likely the Raiders opinion has shifted drastically since, but what Hue Jackson and Al Saunders believe could very well determine if Young could wear the black jersey in 2011 and be groomed to take over in 2012.

He’s old to be a developmental QB and signing him would put pressure on Jason Campbell to perform. He probably wants more money than the Raiders can offer and shot at starting, but you never know what Al Davis will do to bring in a player he likes.

Tennessee should release Young once the new league year begins, making him one of several free agents quarterbacks.

Adam Froman

He is an undrafted player out of Louisville who is athletic for a quarterback, but struggled with injuries during his college career. He’s got some unique tools that need much refinement, but would be a good third quarterback that can also mimic athletic quarterbacks for the scout team.

He’s got potential as a player to develop and is the type of player the Raiders should be looking for to be the third quarterback.

There are not many quarterbacks available that fit what the Raiders are looking for when it comes to age and scheme.

The Raiders will probably do the inevitable and make Charlie Frye the third quarterback and put off the search for a developmental quarterback that can eventually take over as the face of the franchise.

The quarterback play can’t get any worse and even a slight bump in production will lead to a more competitive team. Right?

Chad Ochocinco may have said it best during his media conference call. What is on the field doesn’t match production.

Will Gradkowski cure the ills of the Raiders? Does he really give the Raiders the best chance to win? The stats say no.

Lets compare Russell to Gradkowski.

Gradkowski’s career numbers:

22 games
53.1% completions
9 touchdowns
15 Interceptions
4.9 yards per attempt
19 passes over 20 yards
3 over 40 yards

Russell career numbers:

28 games
51.6% completions
17 touchdowns
21 Interceptions
6.0 yards per attempt
49 passes over 20 yards
7 passes over 40 yards

Russell in 09:
9 games
46.8%
2 TD
9 INT
5.2 yard per attempt

Using those numbers:
Approx 161 more passes will be thrown by a Raiders QB this season

Gradkowski completes: 89 for 789 yards with 3 TD & 5 INTs
Russell career completes: 83 for 966 yards with 4 TDs and 5 INTs
Russell 09′ version: 75 for 837 yards with 2 TDs and 7 INTs

I don’t see how Gradkowski gives the Raiders a better chance to win. This isn’t a defense of Russell, but a sobbering reminder that Gradkowski isn’t any good either.

The Raiders replaced Russell, with a less talented Russell named Gradkowski.

So who should the Raiders start? It is my contention that if we aren’t going to live and die (mostly die) by Russell, it should be Charlie Frye.

Why?

23 games
62.0% completions
16 TDs
25 INTs
6.1 yard avg per attempt
36 passes of over 20 yards

7 passes of over 40 yards

With 161 attempts, Frye would produce 982 yards, on 98 completions. He would also produce 5 TDs, and 8 INTs.

Compared:
Gradkowski completes: 89 for 789 yards with 3 TD & 5 INTs
Russell career completes: 83 for 966 yards with 4 TDs and 5 INTs
Russell 09′ version: 75 for 837 yards with 2 TDs and 7 INTs
Frye completes: 98 for 982 yards and 5 TDs and 8 INTs,

The concern would be those 8 INTs, but clearly the QB that would give us the best chance to win, is still, unfortunately, an improved (or even career average) JaMarcus Russell, or it is Charlie Frye.

Gradkowski is a Paul Hackett selection if I have ever seen one. Cable is leaning on Paul Hackett’s QB knowledge and he is partial to Gradkowski because he and Gradkowski didn’t think Gruden gave him enough of a shot in Tampa Bay considering Gradkowski was a rookie in the only year he had extended playing time.

This is why the Jeff Garcia signing was supposed to be so huge for this team. It would allow the coaches to go to Garcia in order to pressure Russell to do the things he needs to do.

Now the coaching staff is talking big, like this is some permanent move for the future, but when and if Gradkowski is as bad as Russell, the player making the most coin must start. The owner will make that clear.

So while I’d love to give Raider Nation some hope, and tell them Gradkowski will turn things around for the Raiders, it just doesn’t seem likely.

There is a chance that softly thrown passes no longer than 15 yards will work, it worked for Paul Hackett with Chad Pennington.

Cable said they wouldn’t change the offense for Gradkowski, but they should. Receiver screens, and shorter patterns that mean the speedy guys get the ball early is Gradkowski’s only hope.

We wont be the vertical speed of DHB and Murphy with Gradkowski at the helm.

Expect many more targets to go to Schilens and Zach Miller.

I am going to the game this Sunday. If the Raiders don’t entertain me, I am hoping Chad Ochocinco will.

Did we hire Jon Gruden to be the Head Coach? All of a sudden we have six Quarterbacks on the roster. Charlie Frye was officially added to the roster today.

So now we have a glut of QBs and not the slightest idea why?

The short: Gradkowski wasn’t wowing people, Walter wants out. Southwick was a longshot. Frye might actually have a chance to make it as the third Quarterback based on these scenarios.

Time will tell, but that QB group might be a crowded place come OTAs.
