Michael Huff tweeted he was having breakfast with Michael Bush this morning in Napa. A short time later the Raiders announced Bush had re-signed.

Bush ends his quasi-holdout and reports to camp. The Raiders need the body as Darren McFadden broke his orbital bone and Rookie Taiwan Jones is nursing a hamstring injury. Michael Bennett also has a “nick” leaving Rock Cartwright to pick up the slack.

Bush should practice today for the first time in 2011 with the recently signed Kevin Boss.

The Raiders also signed receiver Chad Jackson. He’s another camp body with kick return skills.

Now the hard part; recovering from the win. The Raiders have had the uncanny ability to recover from losses, but a marked inability to recover from a win. Back-to-back wins would be a marker for this team.

The concept is simple. Take one game at a time. Win a game, the next week you are 0-0 and looking to go 1-0. Lose a game, the next week you are 0-0 and looking to go 1-0. It’s cliché, but that doesn’t reduce it to rubble. Each team must be able to do both, focus on the next week instead of the prior week.

Next week Pete Carroll’s Seattle Seahawks come into Oakland on Halloween. The Raider Nation doesn’t need a holiday as an excuse to dress up, but on Halloween you will get more than your fair share of crazy costumes and the FOX broadcast will love it.

A win next week means the Raiders could be playing for the division lead when the Kansas City Chiefs visit Oakland in week nine before a bye in week 10. The Raiders sit at 3-4 and have yet another chance to get back to .500 for the first time since 2002.

The Raiders demoralized the Broncos, something Nnamdi Asomugha and Tommy Kelly have seen before and both highlighted with their postgame interviews. The impact an early big lead can have a snowball effect on the opposition. It has happened routinely to the Raiders and now they get to taste what it is like on the other side.

The only negatives Tom Cable could muster in his post game press conference were penalties, blocks could be a little cleaner and two sacks.

In reality, the penalties are an issue in losses, but never in wins. Avoid the mental mistakes, but this isn’t really a big deal. The errors you want to avoid are penalties that turn third and short into third and long or negate positive plays. Timely penalties are worse than penalties overall. Raiders didn’t have many ‘shoot yourself in the foot’ penalties.

Blocks can always be cleaner. No team has ever executed an entire game with perfect blocks. Sometimes an ugly block works just as well. Not many issues with blocking on Sunday. Keeps improving, but if they do what they did in Denver, they should be fine.

Two sacks surrendered? I can remember at least one of them was Jason Campbell holding the ball too long. Tom Cable is taking issue with two sacks? Really? I didn’t think this line was capable of the performance they turned out Sunday.

Raiders did rack up a list of injuries during the game.

Matt Shaughnessy (Concussion)
Chris Johnson (Concussion)
Samson Satele (Concussion)
Louis Murphy (Clavicle)
Kamerion Wimbley (Groin)
Robert Gallery (Calf)
Darrius Heyward-Bey (ill)
Michael Bennett (Hamstring)

Concussions aren’t to be taken lightly. Players must pass several tests to be cleared to play the following week and the NFL is considering a mandatory one week waiting period for all concussions in the future. Tough to count on any of those three this week.

Louis Murphy re-injured the clavicle he originally injured three weeks ago. Thus far, Murphy is the only receiver who has produced. While the Raiders were able to make things happen without wide receivers on Sunday, defenses are going to load the box to stop Darren McFadden if the Raiders can’t find a competent passing game. Receivers must get involved.

Darrius Heyward-Bey started the game, but came down with an illness. He is the receiver the Raiders need to step up more than anyone. Jacoby Ford and Nick Miller can only be counted on so much.

Gallery’s injury didn’t seem serious, but he’s been an injury magnet, so cross your fingers. Wimbley’s injured groin is a big question and we may not find out the severity until Wednesday.

Jared Veldheer had a great game overall. He started as a left tackle before moving to center when Samson Satele was injured. Mario Henderson came into the game a did a good job run blocking, but his pass blocking wasn’t tested. A healthy Satele keeps Veldheer at left tackle. Veldheer needs to stay at left tackle.

The Raiders could go out and sign a center, but the only one with enough knowledge of the scheme to start next week would be Chris Morris. Jake Grove is also available.

Let’s hope Satele’s concussion was minor and he will be able to play this week.

Other Notes:

Didn’t get one complaint from the Raider Nation about Jason Campbell after the game. The talk the entire week was that Kyle Boller should get the start regardless of the health of Campbell.

Late in the week it was looking like Campbell might miss the game due to injury and that Kyle Boller might get the start. Not so fast.

Speaking of injured player surprises, who had Darren McFadden sitting on their fantasy bench? That was 47 points, ouch. I did, but it looks like I might still get the win against @ThunderingBlurb

Studs and duds article should be easy this week? Not so fast. I’ve had to think long and hard about any possible dud on the Raiders and how can I possibly give out studs to only a few players? Harder than you think to pinpoint them despite the huge win.

Chaz Schilens will miss 3-6 weeks after undergoing surgery on his knee. He is more than likely out for the opener and likely will also miss the first few weeks of the season. His injury history is now pages long and he can’t stay healthy enough to stay on the field for more than a few games at a time.

Michael Bush will have a procedure on his left thumb. Tom Cable said he will not wear a cast, but will wear protection on the thumb. This is good news as it may have already been determined that he can play through the injury or wouldn’t miss significant time.

Michael Bennett may have secured his spot on the roster with the injury to Bush and the injury history of Darren McFadden.

Jason Campbell is likely good for the season opener. The more severe injury sustained in Saturday nights game was not the stinger but the right wrist injury from the drive before. This likely isn’t an issue, he came back into the game after the injury. The Raiders will be cautious, but I don’t expect this to be anything going forward.

Jared Veldheer will practice at tackle and center this week and it will be determined soon which position will be his permanent position. This is a tough decision to make, with the poor play of Mario Henderson and the injury and sub par play of Samson Satele.

News and notes from the Raiders 10-point victory Thursday night in Dallas:
Football season has arrived, officially, with the first game preseason game.
It doesn’t count and the score doesn’t matter, but the new season started and the fans were looking for hope in a new team lead by a new quarterback.
While the offense appeared calm, controlled and more organized under Campbell, the production wasn’t there. Campbell went 7 of 15 for 49 yards. Darrius Heyward-Bey didn’t have a catch. Zach Miller had three catches for just 15 yards.
Campbell only converted one third down out of six and didn’t lead the offense to a score.
Kyle Boller played the remainder of the game after Campbell took a seat in the second quarter. After a rocky start Boller settled in and ended the night 12 of 21 for 148 yards and a touchdown.
Observations:
- Johnnie Lee Higgins appears to be playing with the swagger he had in 2008. He had a few catches, even if he did tip a ball into the air that should have been intercepted.
- Yamon Figurs has a few nice catches, but was uneven (good/bad) as a return man.
- Nick Miller continues to impress and I’d be surprised if he is cut at this point.
- Michael Bennett is clearly the superior running back, but Rock Cartwright is much more versatile. The competition is now a dead heat.
- Michael Bush is a load to bring down when the defenders can’t square him up, but he is clearly the type of back that gets better as the game goes on.
- The starting offensive line allowed one sack and it was ugly. Three defenders blew by Samson Satele and Cooper Carlisle. Langston Walker also had a false-start penalty.
- Kyle Boller’s success was directly proportional to the blocking of the second and third string offensive line.Shaky early; solid later.
- Jared Veldheer does a good job run blocking for the center position. Can he put heat on Satele?
- Chris Johnson can’t cover the opposing team’s top wide receiver. It is important for Nnamdi Asomugha to shadow the opposition’s top receiver in 2010.
- Walter McFadden and Jeremy Ware aren’t going to put the pressure on Stanford Routt and Johnson anytime soon. That said, both seemed to grow as they received more playing time.
- Travis Goethel and Stevie Brown are among the lower round draft picks that could have an unexpected impact.
- Lamarr Houston benefited from good coverage and recorded two sacks. This will be a confidence boost for the rookie, who played off and on into the fourth quarter.
- Matt Shaughnessy was the most impressive defensive lineman Thursday night. He brought the pressure in the pass game and was getting plenty of penetration stopping the run.
- Rolando McClain didn’t see a ton of action, more wait than see for this year’s top draft pick.
- Trevor Scott is going to be moved around a lot, specifically as a nickel rush end with his hand in the dirt.
- Ricky Brown continues to be a preseason star. If only he could stay healthy.

The first preseason game could answer questions or it could create new ones and complicate old ones.

There is no way to know what will happen Thursday night in Dallas. More than anything, the coaches want to make it through the preseason without significant injuries.

There are plenty of questions that need to be answered and the coaches will start to answer them Thursday in Dallas.

Who will win the third running back job: Michael Bennett or Rock Cartwright?

Each back has a different style despite similarly small statures. Cartwright being the better special teams player and much more physical. Bennett is a quicker, faster and can get to the edge. This will be a tough call the coaches will have to make. Cartwright is a little more useful as long as McFadden and Bush are carrying the load, but should the third back be pushed into starter duty as it was multiple times last year, Bennett would probably be the back you’d want to have.

Will the return game improve?

The coaches would probably like to get Jacoby Ford, Yamon Figurs, Johnnie Lee Higgins and Cartwright a chance to return one in a game situation. Ford’s a bit banged up and may not play Thursday, leaving the others to have the first opportunity to wow the coaching staff.

What are the Raiders doing with Desmond Bryant and Thomas Howard?

The two ended last season as starters, but have been pushed down the depth chart. At first glance Bryant was pushed aside by Richard Seymour. While Seymour did move inside, he will play the three technique tackle position. This means Tommy Kelly is taking snaps with the first team at Bryant’s position.

Howard was moved from weak-side linebacker to strong-side linebacker last season, with Trevor Scott taking over on the weak side. In the offseason, the Raiders brought in Quentin Groves to play the weak side and Kamerion Wimbley to play the strong side.

Howard’s projected role shifted to nickel linebacker, but during camp that role has been filed by Mike Mitchell relegating Howard to third string duties. Adding insult to injury, Cable has repeatedly put down the work the linebackers did in 2009. Howard is the only current player that started the majority of the games at linebacker last season.

Rumors have been circulating that Howard could be released. It one possibility. It could also be that the Raiders knows exactly the type of player Howard is and are intent on getting Scott, Wimbley, Groves and Mitchell extra work.

Will the offensive line block better?

Robert Gallery is healthy, Samson Satele and Mario Henderson have another year in the system, and Langston Walker appears to have latched on at starting right tackle. Will these men, along with Cooper Carlisle be able to protect Jason Campbell? Can this line get a Raiders running back to 1000 yards?

Watch DeMarcus Ware Thursday night versus Mario Henderson. One of the best players in the NFL could wreck havoc versus a base offense.
