Hackett is the only one I see that fits the mold of the type of WR we need. Berrian I am not impressed with, but he would be interesting to see with a good young QB, unlike a bad young QB. Hackett is a great route runner and turns on a dime, he has size and speed, I think he is ready to develop into a #1. Apparently the Seahawks do to and Hackett is “...not going to some team where I don’t have a chance to win." This article says Berrian still could be franchised and he said he would prefer to stay in Chicago, but we have expressed interest in the Bay Area native.
Choices are thin at WR, so we are going to need to figure out what to do in the event we don't sign a free agent WR. If we draft one, we need a guy with great understanding of the position. Many college WR need about 3 years to develop, we need production right away. Insult to injury, this draft is thin at WR, very very thin. Porter's antics as a Raider have not been well documented IMO. We let him off the hook for being a cancer with a bad regime, but we chastise Randy Moss for doing the same thing.Porter also has had several problems with the fans. This is an account of a member of the Black Hole, which was emailed to me:
"At the Bears game the Raiders had the ball on say their 3 yard line, on the Black Hole side of the field. One of the guys in the Hole was yelling at the offensive group, saying things like "get your shit together boys" "lets get a fucking drive together already" etc etc. While the rest of the team was talking over the play in the huddle, Jerry Porter turned around and bitched out the fan who was yelling. The fan started going crazy which got the attention of everyone else in the first couple of rows of the Black Hole. Porter is standing there giving us the finger, then he starts to gesture himself jacking off, which is fitting because he is a jack off. Lastly, he points to us and tells us "I got all your money". The games after that anytime Porter came near the Black Hole he would get his ass booed and we gave him the finger right back.
Someone off to the side of the Black Hole caught him yelling at us, too bad this picture doesn't show him giving us the finger or any of that stuff but you can in fact see him mouthing off the fans.
Porter has been an piece of shit for years now, he is a prick, an under achieving piece of shit and he does not want to be here. He has told us in the past that he wants to play for San Diego, and he has said the Raider mystique is dead. He told the fans behind the bench last year that he rooted for the Raiders to lose. Also, I heard after the San Diego game he was running around the field yelling "I'm Free, I'm Free".

Whether EX has a personal vendetta against Porter, i have no idea, but the picture evidence seems to support his claim. I have no reason to believe he is lying. Judge for yourself, but I don't want Porter back.
There are other options to consider. So below is my bold outline for how we can possibly ignore the WR position for one more year.
We could run more double TE sets with Madsen, Miller with motion and draft a guy like McFadden (not saying we should, just would be part of my plan). A RB that can catch passes would improve offensive versatility. Not being able to get a elite WR means we need to play into our strengths. If we don't draft a RB, we aren't particularly strong there. If we do we are potentially very strong.
McFadden, Bush, Miller, Madsen, Curry, Griffith, O'Neal, and maybe Higgins could be our offensive chain movers. any and all of them could catch passes and McFadden could help stretch the field as WR or bring in the safeties, so the slower WRs and TEs can get over the top. The FBs and Bush can be the underneath WRs. Like always the FBs will block like crazy.
We can essentially stretch the field by attacking them at our strengths instead of having that speedy WR.
It would need to be more choreographed than just having a WR run deep, but it is also a strategy few teams employ, not because it doesn't work, but few teams have the correct personnel. It isn't common to have two good FB two good RB and two good pass catching TE.
On any given play the defense would have to adjust to an extra RB, FB or TE splitting out wide, hopefully drawing mismatches. We still might lack a WR streaking down the field, but with too many underneath weapons for the secondary and LB core to cover, we could turn into a proficient West Coast Offense. We didn't have a deep threat when Gannon was the QB. Rice, Brown, Porter, Garner (Pass catcher) Ritchie (Pass catcher) and no TE. So this would just be a hybrid of that west coast. Russell will need to be mobile and run when need be (like Gannon did), but Russell will also be able to take that deep shot Gannon never could, which should make up for the lack of WR.
Using this strategy leads me to believe Bryant Johnson could become a possibility. He is perfect for running the slants across the middle you need in a West Coast Offense.
Sigining Berrian and Fargas to me, doesn't help as much as say McFadden and Bryant Johnson. We do need to address Defense and of course drafting a guy like McFadden makes that harder. However, it isn't as if Re-signing Kelly and picking DL in the second round is a huge step down. Nor would be drafting a RB in the second that can do similar to what McFadden could. In my mind, WR, RB, DT are priorities.
I really want to believe in Bush at RB, but my heart says we can, and my head says there is a chance but it is far from a sure thing.

Hackett isn't very fast. He's a sure handed possession WR. Berrian fits more of a need as our roster is full of possession WR's aside from JLH. McFadden is over hyped big time. I really hope we go DL in the first or trade down.
ReplyDelete4.53 isn't elite, but pad speed and combine speed are different. He isn't a burner, but he is as fast or faster than Porter (4.55). What I am also saying is a possession WR may actually be better if we decide to draft a guy LIKE McFadden.
